Scuba divers need a lot of gear and all that gear can be expensive. Looking online for discount scuba gear is a great way for a scuba diver to save some cash. Online stores offer great discounts. The lower prices come from the low overhead online store owners have because they don’t have sales associates to pay and store fronts to lease.
Many online retailers also offer shipping discounts on orders over a certain dollar amounts. They also have package deals, making it easy for a diver to get all the equipment they need in one purchase. Because the items cannot be inspected in person, it’s important that the diver is familiar with different pieces of equipment and what they need personally.
Scuba divers get to enjoy the ocean for free after they make the initial investment on their gear. Learning the gear is the most important aspect in learning to scuba dive. Being familiar with the gear can mean a difference between life and death.
Here is a general list of scuba gear that divers should have:
•Alternate air source- also known as an octopus. The octopus is the backup second stage regulator.
•Buoyancy control device (BCD) - a jacket that the diver wears. The jacket can have air added or removed to adjust the buoyancy. The jacket is also where the tank attaches and has many pockets and rings for the diver to attach and store gear.
•Booties- neoprene boots that are worn with open heeled fins to keep feet warm and protected from stinging animals and sharp coral.
•Compass- tells diver which direction they are going. Can be attached to gauge console, worn on wrist, or integrated in the dive computer.
•Cylinder- also known as the dive tank. This is where the diver gets his air supply. The tank is usually made of aluminum or steel. The most common size is 12 liters or 90 cubic feet of compressed air.
•Depth gauge- tells the diver how deep they are in feet or meters.
•Dive computer- give the diver various information such as depth, dive time, air consumption, and temperature. Can be mounted on gauge console or worn on wrist.
•Dive knife- not a weapon for the diver, but is used in case the diver becomes entangled. It’s a good idea for a diver to carry one on vest and one on a leg.
•Fins- make swimming easier for diver. Can be full foot for dives in warm water or open heeled to allow the diver to wear booties in colder water.
•Regulator- includes first and second stage regulator. The first stage regulator attaches to the tank and converts the pressurized air to intermediate pressure. The second stage regulator is what the diver puts in their mouth; it reduces the air from the first stage regulator to ambient (breathable) pressure.
•Slate- a waterproof slate that has pictures of fish and animals on one side and a writing surface for underwater communication on the other side.
•Snorkel- allows diver to breathe when they are close to the surface. A good snorkel will have a purge valve and a splash guard.
•Submersible Pressure Gauge (SPG) - tells the diver how much air is left in the tank.
•Weight system- can be a weighted belt with a quick release buckle, or weights that can be inserted into BCD.
•Wetsuit- neoprene suit to provide warmth and protection. Can be shortie (short sleeves and shorts), a full length (long sleeves and full length pants), or the less popular farmer john (two separate overlapping pieces for extra warmth.)
